About Us

36 years of making music matter.

The Mobile Music Lab is a program of Jersey Surf, Inc. – a South Jersey nonprofit with more than three decades of experience bringing music education and community programming to people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.

Our Story

Jersey Surf began in 1990 as a competitive drum and bugle corps — one of the few organizations of its kind in New Jersey, and one that would go on to give more than 4,000 students and their families a formative experience in music, performance, and community over the next three and a half decades.

In 2024, the Jersey Surf board made a deliberate and forward-looking decision: to redirect the organization’s deep musical expertise, its relationships, and its resources away from competitive performance and toward something with a broader reach. The Mobile Music Lab is the result of that decision.

The mission hasn’t changed. Making more music makers to make more music. The stage just got a lot bigger.

What we Do Now

Today, the Mobile Music Lab brings interactive music-making experiences to schools, senior centers, summer camps, festivals, municipalities, and community organizations throughout New Jersey, the Delaware Valley, and the broader Mid-Atlantic region.

We arrive fully self-contained. We facilitate experiences that meet people where they are — no musical background required, no equipment needed on your end, no prior exposure to music necessary. We work with four-year-olds and eighty-four-year-olds, with Title I schools and corporate event sponsors, with library branches and large-scale festival producers.

The thread connecting all of it is the same belief that has guided this organization since 1990: that making music together changes people, and that access to that experience should not be limited by age, ability, income, or geography.

Our Reach

The Mobile Music Lab’s community programming tells one part of the Jersey Surf story. Another part plays out on a national stage.

Jersey Surf was selected to provide comprehensive production support for the American Heart Association’s Survivor Drum program — one of the most recognizable and emotionally resonant elements of the AHA’s Heart Walk and Heart & Stroke Walk events. This year, that program will appear at more than 180 events across all 50 states, reaching hundreds of thousands of cardiac survivors, caregivers, and supporters.

Our role is total. We manage the instrument acquisition and maintenance as well as custom graphic wrap design and application for the drums used in the program, along with all associated hardware, mallets, stands, and cases. We coordinate the nationwide logistics of deploying this inventory to events in every corner of the country — and getting it back. Every drum that opens and closes a Heart Walk event this year carries Jersey Surf’s work on it.

It is a responsibility we take seriously. And it reflects the same organizational commitment that every Mobile Music Lab booking receives: professional-grade execution, reliable logistics, and a genuine understanding of what’s at stake when music shows up for people in meaningful moments.
